Something About Caritas?

Caritas India is the Official National Development Organization of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India. It was established in 1962, to respond to the emerging Socio-Economic problems of the poor and the weaker sections of the India Society. It is committed to the nation building process. In the last 38 years of its existence, Caritas India has been serving the poor and the marginalised sections of the society without any discrimination.

Our vision is to transform the society into a just and sustainable social order based on the Gospel values of Love, Peace and Justice.

MISSION

Our mission is to restore the human dignity of the poor and marginalised through empowerment process.

LEVEL OF INTERVENTION

Provide financial support for development Programs Assist in Capacity Building and Carry out Relief and Rehabilitation Programs during both Natural and Man made Calamities.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Financial supports are extended for development programs. Relief activities and Rehabilitation programs. Under developmental programs, emphasis is given to Community Organisation, Community Preventive and Remedial Health , Projects, Awareness building , Community Economic Developmental through Self help Income Generation Programs, Community Safe Drinking Water, Sanitation, Environment, Social Forestry and Watershed Development Programs.

RELIEF AND REHABILATION

Caritas, over the years has involved heavily in relief, Rehabilitation, Disaster Management Programs.

· The recent Relief and Rehabilitation widely appreciated and endorsed as models are that of Lature-Earthquake, Where apart from the emergency relief activities, 2000 Earthquake proof houses were built and community participation and ownership were clearly demonstrated and the Government of Mharashtra have appreciated the work in its official award.
· The response to Andhra Pradesh Cyclone Relief and Rehabilitation work was also equally appreciated by the state government, where 1400 cyclone proof houses were constructed.
· For the Super Cyclone affected people of Orissa, Caritas India supports Programs with over 8 crores on relief operations alone.
· Caritas has joined hands with catholic Relief Service (CRS) in engaging succour to the Orissa victims . They are working with the Local Catholic Mission. The main areas of support has been in providing food, medicines, blankets, polythene sheets, 30,000 family kits under OFDA/USAID/CRS Programs, Cleaning of Contaminated wells, disposal of corpse and carcasses under ECHO supported porgrams.
